1. Gaston ('Beauty And The Beast')

No doubt that Gaston is a disgusting man. He is rude and keeps interrupting Belle when she is reading. It is obvious that he is not suitable to Belle. So, when he is introduced to Belle, “He is handsome, all right, and rude and conceited and ... Oh, Papa, he’s not for me.” Belle dislikes him. However, in some way, he has done something that is judged not to be so bad. When Belle seems to be trapped in the horrifying castle, he gathers the village and tries his best to rescue her. He is not a really bad man. In fact, his love for possession of Belle lets no one approach her and even if it means killing her true love.

2. Yzma ('The Emperor's New Groove')

What turns Yzma an evil character? Probably Kuzco is not as good an emperor as what we think. Try to think about this, Kuzco is not exactly a merciful and wise emperor. When he was not satisfied with an old man, he let merchants throw him out. Yzma was an ambitious woman, and was going to show her talent serving Kuzco with ideas. However, finally, she was also thrown out of her position, which turned her crazy and to become obsessed with killing their emperor. But what we should consider is that: is her intentional despotic rule really worse than Kuzco's callous neglect?

3. Hades ('Hercules')

Hades was reluctant to be appointed as the owner of the Underworld. Thinking the underworld depressing and gloomy, Hades hated to stay here. Because of this, he secretly took a scheme to take the place of Zeus and conduct Olympus. Though in Greek mythology, he was not written to be an entire evil character. He was described as a bad-temper and fast-talking man in Disney version. But, isn’t his action just like a man seeking for other jobs when knowing the present one not suitable?

4. Mother Gothel ('Tangled')

 Mother Gothel could be considered as a merciful mother instead of an evil witch. For a start, Mother Gothel is a witch, with a magical golden flower to keep her beauty. Because of the Queen’s illness, Queen’s soldiers took the golden flower away to cure the Queen. Though the Queen recovered from the disease, Mother Gothel lost her beauty. However, the magic of golden flower was passed to a baby girl, the mother of which is Queen. Mother Gothel was so obsessed with remaining young that she steals the girl. Instead of tyrannizing the girl, Mother Gothel treated her as her daughter. She had done something that a real mother does. All she wanted to achieve is her beauty, not does harm to the little girl.

5. Ursula ('The Little Mermaid')

Actually, that’s an equal bargain. Ursula didn’t cheat Ariel for taking her voice. Before the magic, Ursula had drawn out an entire contract that Ariel could read it carefully and surely have right to pause the bargain. So Ariel was not supposed to really get mad about the whole legs for voice bargain. Because she had already known the result of the exchange. It wasn’t Ursula’s fault.

6. Sid ('Toy Story')

Sid was only the owner of those toys, right? He was just a little boys playing his toys. Why would say he was evil? Maybe just stand on the toys’ side. A little boy was playing his toys, well, when being in bad temper, would treat toys in a fierce way. But, they were toys, not being known in advance were living creatures. Think about that, your toys are something with awareness, which will even have a party when you are asleep. A little horrifying, isn’t it?  

7. Edgar ('The Aristocats')

Obviously, he was a bit anxious about not getting the inheritance. Only when he took good care of mistress’s beloved cats until death did he have the right to get the fortune. After decades of loyal service as a butler, he heard his mistress words and felt an urge to let those cats out. Because of cats’ existence, he won’t inherit fortune instantly. It sounds reasonable to a long-serving and loyal butler. He only wanted to own his possession ahead of time, fearing to be dead before inheriting fortune. No wonder he decides to take matters into his own hands.

8. Captain Hook ('Peter Pan')

Anyway, Hook was considered to be one of the most sympathetic Disney Villains. His miserable childhood made the part of his cruelty, which started from his training to be a pirate. However, his mother thought him to be hopeless. A child as he was, he was heavily excluded. After being cutting a hand by Peter Pan, He's completely destroyed. He almost gave up sailing for a period and hunt for Peter Pan for revenge. However, his constant failure made him frustrated.

9. Maleficent ('Sleeping Beauty')

Being angry about not getting invited by King and Queen on Aurora’s christening ceremony, Maleficent made a curse to Aurora. Her anger could be understood. Maybe when your friend had a cool party and they did not invited you, you would get mad as well. But you didn’t have the power to curse them. Um, you definitely expressed your dissatisfaction, maybe to other friends, maybe to your parents.  

10.  The Evil Stepmother ('Cinderella')

Stepmother can be a symbol of the evil. But stepmother tries to do everything she can to keep a good relationship with stepchild in real life. Lady Tremaine, also known as the “Wicked Stepmother”, did something bad to Cinderella, letting her do laundry and giving her poor clothes to wear. And, she thought every method to keep Cinderella from going to the hall. Anyway, she just wanted her daughter to be selected by the Prince. She tried her best to help her daughter, in some way, did she a good mother? Cinderella was her stepdaughter after all.
