Gender Diversity has been a controversial topic on TV. Recently, however, gender diversity has made its way onto the Disney World. Slow but steady, Disney has been marching towards embracing diversity into its characters. Recently, Disney had made great advances in representing the LGBTQ+ community.

Just lately, Disney’s confirmed its first even bisexual lead character on “The Owl House" series. So in this article, we will feature the character, the story, and the experiences and challenges of the Dana Terrace, the creator of the series, in creating the series. Read on to know more. But remember spoiler alert ahead.

The first-ever confirmed bisexual Disney character made her debut on a television series called “The Owl House”. The said bisexual character is the 14-year-old Dominican-American girl, Luz Noceda. Luz is the show’s young protagonist, a normal teen who goes on a great journey to another world to become a great witch.

The series follows her adventure to becoming a witch, even though she does not have any magical abilities. In the past episodes, Luz was shown to be attracted to male characters as well.

However, in the two most recent episodes, “Enchanting Grom Fright” and “Wing It Like Witches,” an interesting relationship between Luz and another recurring female character, Amity Blight was featured. It was revealed that Amity has been shown to have romantic feelings for Luz, to the extent of having intentions of asking her to the Grom, the world’s version of prom. In fact, Amity has written a letter to Luz, asking her to attend the prom with her. However, her fear of being rejected by Luz caused her to not give the letter and keep it as a secret. Eventually, in the most recent episode of the show, Luz attended the prom and danced with her classmate Amity.

It was also exposed by Terrace on twitter that at first, a certain Disney leadership was not too fond of the idea of having an LGBTQ+ character. In her statement, she said that she was told by a certain Disney leadership that she could not represent any form of a bisexual or gay relationship on the channel.

However, Terrace insisted on her intention to put queer kids in the main cast of the show. She added that it was hard for her to sneak in the character as she is a horrible liar.

Aside from that, Dana identifies herself as bisexual. Thus, she always wanted to write about a bisexual character. In this case, she said that she really pushed Disney in allowing LGBTQ+ characters to the show. In her tweet, she said that "I'm bi! I want to write a bi character, dammit! Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership. Rpresentation matters!".

She also reminded the viewers and her followers to always fight for what you believe and what you want to see. She tweeted, “As Owl House continues, I can't wait to explore things that are important to me and my crew. Looking forward to the next chapter."

Due to this, Terrace received tons of positive feedback from viewers. Many of the fans thanked her for representing the LGBTQ+ community in the show and wished that more shows like “The Owl House" were available when they were children.

The creator also received a huge amount of praise from her followers on twitter. One of her followers tweeted, "I can't put into words how thankful I am for you in creating this show!" and another follower commented, "I can't even put into words how much this show means to me, and how much it means to see you willing to fight like this for you and your crew and your audience."

This is not the first time an LGBTQ+ character appeared on Disney. However, not until recently, most LGBTQ+ characters were only represented in minor or non-recurring characters. The Pixar short film “Out” featured a gay main character in a short film on Disney Plus. Andi Mack also became the first show on Disney Channel to have a character discover they are gay.

Similarly, in this year’s feature film “Onward,” the character Officer Spector, voiced by Lena Waithe, was revealed to identify as a lesbian. Disney also aired its first-ever same-sex kiss in an animated show on Star vs the Forces of Evil in 2017.

Likewise, Kids' TV has taken several steps forward in the past few years when it comes to improving LGBTQ+ representation on screen. The CBBC series, The Next Step, recently aired its first same-sex kiss.

If you want to see the series, The Owl House airs on Disney Channel and Disney+.
