The new trailer of ‘The Little Mermaid’ just dropped and netizens are not happy.

Disney released the official trailer for the new live-action remake ‘The Little Mermaid’ on 10 May 2022, starring Halle Bailey in the lead role as the Mermaid Ariel alongside Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

The Movie trailer garnered a missive amount of attention after it received a whopping 1.5 Million dislikes on YouTube before the dislike button was disabled. Making the number of dislikes no longer visible.

Ariel, who is from a Danish origin, is being played by a black actress and unfortunately yet unsurprisingly, people are infuriated!

A red-headed, white-skinned mermaid was depicted in the original 1989 animation. Since many people believe that Ariel is intrinsically a white princess and that this reality should not be altered, they are upset with the live-action version's inclusion of a black actress. Some users are even passing ageist remarks to the actress thinking she is Halle Berry when in fact she is most definitely a whole other person.

The internet is equally divided when it comes to the casting of the actress. As Some Twitter users jumped to her defense, blasting the other half of users for being racist, sparking a fight between the two groups in the comments section under the video.

Another reason why people claim they will not watch the movie is the sheer lack of effort put into the visuals of the movie, which in all honesty can be seen from the trailer.

Quality and bad graphics even though sources claim the movie has a budget of about 160 Million Dollars, which we frankly can’t tell from the trailer, with absolutely zero effort put into any sort of detailing or good editing. It looks as if Ariel is looking up to the sky from the bottom of a dusty well rather than from under the water. The water surrounding Ariel has the ambiance of everything but the ambiance of a Disney movie, with the ‘water’ looking all dark and gloomy, as if an oil spill had just occurred.

The Little Mermaid remake, not the only thing Walt Disney is under fire for. A recent controversy regarding the Live-action remake of Snow White divided the internet over the casting of the lead actress for the iconic role of Snow White, Rachel Zegler, who is of Latin descent.

Snow White is speculated to be released sometime in 2024, also starring Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and Andrew Bur nap as Jonathan.

As the original Snow White is shown as a Caucasian character the casting of the Latina caused frenzy and the actress, Rachel Zegler had to face the backlash.

Another concern for the fans was regarding the low quality costume that the actress was seen wearing.  As leaked pictures during production show the actress wearing an accurate copy of the animated dress, maybe a little too accurate, as fans think it looks like a child’s costume out of a horror boutique.  The dress itself lacks personality and looks like half a banana peel.

With brocaded silk, lace, and corset tie accents added to the bodice, Rachel dons the entire animated Snow White garment, and then some. The vivid canary yellow tulle design on the skirt, however, is more akin to an extravagant Halloween Boutique costume for little girls than it is to a genuine princess outfit from the Medieval Era.

Following the backlash that Disney and Rachel Zegler received, a Disney spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

 

While Rachel stated, “Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me," Rachel told Andrew Garfield in a recent interview with variety. “You don't normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries.”

Of the criticism, Rachel agreed with Andrew's sentiment after he said: “Ah, those people. The people that we need to educate. ‘The people that we need to love into awareness.’

Moreover, the movie also received severe criticism from the famous Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage. During a recent interview on Marc Maron's “WTF” podcast, Dinklage said it made “no sense” how Disney would be progressive to an extent by casting Rachel Zegler as Snow White while ignoring the larger problem with the titular dwarfs.

Furthermore, he said, “I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me," Dinklage said. “You’re progressive in one way, and you’re still making that f--king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f--k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

He added, “I don’t know which studio that is, but they were so proud of it. All love and respect to the actress and all the people who thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m just like, what are you doing?”
