It is often said that a dog is man’s best friend. This story is about a dog named BonBon proves that one dog’s devotion to its owner can run much deeper than anyone could possibly realise.

This story begins four years ago when a dog named BonBon got separated from his owners in Thailand when they were on a road trip. After his separation from his loving owners, BonBon returned to the spot on the highway where he last saw his family and waited patiently for them to return. The loyal dog did this every day, and began to gain attention from the local residence of the area. Many locals attempted to “rescue” the dog, but the loyal dog simply returned to the spot and waited for his owners.

Fast forward a few years, to when a man named Anuchit Uncharoen spotted a frail-looking dog on the side of the road in the Mueang District of Thailand. He questioned locals in the area to find out what they knew about the animal. That is when he learned that the dog was being fed by a woman named Saowalak Pinnuchawet.

Saowalak told Anuchit that she had been bringing food to the dog after an unsuccessful attempt to take the dog home to live with her. She told Anuchit that when she took the dog home, he simply escaped and returned to the area where she had found him. Saowalak also informed Anuchit that the dog, dubbed Leo by the locals, had been hanging around in that same area for four years.

Anuchit decided to use the power of social media and posted a picture of Leo online and see if anyone recognised the dog. A man by the name of Noi saw the post and stepped forward to say that the dog was his and was named BonBon, and proceeded to tell faithful BonBon’s story. He had escaped from Noi’s car at a gas station in 2015 not far from where he had been patiently waiting for the past four years.

Noi organised to retrieve BonBon, and even though the loyal dog was very excited to see Noi, this story does not end in the fairy-tale manner that we would like. Noi soon learned just as Saowalak had, that after waiting in the same spot for four years, dear BonBon/Leo was no longer suited to living as a house pet and preferred to remain in the area he had now begun to see as home. Noi vowed to visit him frequently and Saowalak and other locals committed to feed and care for BonBon as they had done over the years.
