In what has seemed like a debate that could tear apart a nation, it appears that movie giants Sony and Disney have come to an agreement to share custody of our dear little Spidey, and it has been described as a win-win-win.

In August last year, Sony and Disney went through the process of creating a financial deal to determine Spider-Man’s future. It was reported that Disney proposed a 50-50 co-financing deal, meaning each company would put up half of the production costs and then split the profits. Sony had reportedly refused, and thus began global panic that Spider Man could be torn from the MCU after Tom Holland’s Spider-Man had been set up so perfectly for character growth and development in previous films.

Creating a working deal was clearly beneficial for all parties involved (especially us!), and the final agreement has been shared.

Sony gets to use Holland's Spider-Man and the MCU in their upcoming spinoff films like Morbius and Venom 2. They are also building towards having Tom Holland (our favourite Spider-Man EVER!) play Peter Parker in their villain stories, beginning with a heavily rumoured cameo in Venom 2 this fall. Disney is set to receive a quarter of the profits from Homecoming 3 (while covering an equal percentage of the costs). Furthermore, Disney now owns the Spider-Man merchandising rights, has a cut of the box office returns, and most importantly, they get to keep our boy Holland in the MCU which will continue fan support for their future movies.

Sony is still expanding its own "Spidey-verse," as hinted at the trailer for spinoff Morbius. Far From Home raked in more than $1 billion at the box office and became the studio's most successful movie ever, so continuing its Marvel Studio relationship seems like a wise move financially. It also makes sense for Disney, as they can continue an organic feeling continuation of their upcoming movies without needing to avoid any and all references to the MCU in their upcoming film Homecoming 3, which will build upon the the cliffhanger in Spider-Man: Far From Home's mid-credits scene. Furthermore, Sony's upcoming spinoffs like Morbius now have the rich lore of Marvel's shared universe to draw on, rather than having to operate separately (and, more to the point, without Spider-Man). Their interactions with the MCU's Phase 4 slate will probably start out fairly one-sided in Morbius and Venom 2, but the spinoffs after that (like the mystery Sony-Marvel film recently scheduled for 2021) have the potential to build on that foundation in more significant and meaningful ways.
