In the Tim Burton films, the White Queen and the Red Queen are sisters, in contrary from Lewis Carroll's novels. In the first film, Mirana mentioned to Alice that the red queen is her older sister. Though the line can be easily missed, it was mentioned again by the Red Queen before Alice’s fight against the Jabberwocky.

This sibling relationship was later explored more in the next film, Alice: Through the Looking Glass. In the movie, the rivalry between the sisters was explained further. The White Queen appeared to be favored over her older sister. In fact, their father publicly named Mirana as his next successor and not Iracebeth. This was after the red queen’s public violent outburst to the people, thus is considered not fit for the crown. Mirana also appears to be favored more by her mother, as she is inclined to believe Mirana’s lie than the truth said by Iracebeth.

Alice had to help her reunite with her crying child, fix her hair and shawl, or sing her to sleep. The character of the White Queen was meant to initiate a part reversal, whereas Alice will appear mature and organized, taking care of the White Queen, despite the age difference.

When Alice went back in time and encountered Time, the man remarked that it should be impossible for her to be there. Not soon after, the Red Queen appears in the Time’s realm. However, Time does not appear to be surprised at all, meaning that the Red Queen also has an easy access to the Time’s realm.

In the first film, Alice infiltrates the Red Queen's castle to obtain the Vorpal sword and defeat the Jabberwocky on Frabjous day. She took the sword back to the White Queen. Upon receiving the sword, the White Queen takes the sword in the caste’s armory where the champion's armor is kept, commenting that the sword is once home again.

Though the Vorpal sword was used by the Champion, Alice, to defeat the Jabberwocky, its real home is in the White Queen's castle. Meaning, the sword is possibly owned by the White Queen's and was temporarily lent to Alice.
